Projects by Stefan Krüskemper operate in public and in public spaces, using artistic resources to tackle issues of personal, societal and context-specific relevance. As a consequence of his way of working, which depends on participation and on collaboration with persons concerned in various ways – experts and interest groups – conventional concepts of artistic authorship and technical competence have undergone a shift of meaning. For the artist in the urban environment, working at the interface between disparate spheres to make community-building experiences achievable, artistic practice today has to focus more on communication and strategy.

Stefan Krüskemper and Jörg Amonat established the Berlin buero für integrative kunst (Office of Integrative Art) in 2000 as a forum for this integrative approach to creating art. Within the framework it provides, artists work on their projects individually and jointly in varying constellations, as the case may be. On the one hand they work on initiatives of their own designed to explore the discursive potential opened up by art, while on the other they deal with enquiries received by the Office or addressed to a specific artist. In terms of format, Stefan Krüskemper’s multimedial projects include situation-based interventions, site-specific installations and concept art.

Since 2005, the artistic processes have been accompanied by commentary and reflection in the publications of the verlag für integrative kunst (Publisher of Integrative Art). Its programme includes books and documentations as well as video and audio productions. A speciality is the highly condensed form known as the text miniature. Krüskemper and Amonat regard publishing activity – broadly speaking, the publication of texts, articles and essays – as an integral part of the role of a creative artist.

In addition to his work as a practising artist, Stefan Krüskemper teaches and gives lectures at universities. His work with students focuses on group discussion as a complement to the conceptual development of individual ideas and initiatives, on mutual sharing of experience in the visualisation and implementation of emerging projects, and on teaching the practical fundamentals of art for public spaces.
